Schematics of the setup to be built for measuring small samples’ transmission and reflection characteristics

In order to derive the characteristics of a metamaterial, one shall be able to measure both amplitude and phase for the transmitted as well as reflected beam from the sample of interest. Using these four data one can calculate the effective refraction index and the impedance of a material.

The project is dedicated to building a setup that can measure these values and thus allowing a complete optical characterisation of the structure. It also includes clean-room hands-on experience such that to be able to design and fabricate “simple” metamaterials that can be then tested and described using the built setup.
