FOSS and DTU Energy are looking for students to do numerical simulation on permanent magnet couplings for use in FOSS’ existing instrumentation. DTU Energy has a substantial code based on Matlab for calculating the magnetic forces in detail and the primary task in the project is to optimize the existing magnetic coupling with the option of designing a new coupling as well.
Two magnets act on each other with forces that may in general be found through the surface integral of Maxwell’s stress tensor over the surface surrounding one of the magnets. In order to evaluate this integral, the magnetic field needs to be accurately described on the surface. DTU Energy’s model framework, MagTense, can do exactly this and the students will be granted full access to this code.
The project will be very relevant for FOSS in terms of ongoing instrument projects and planned advancements in in-house simulation capabilities. The student(s) will be granted access to our modern R&D facilities in Hillerød and will be part of an exciting development environment.
